Alone Time During Sports Travel

By: Liz Patterson

Sports travel is an exciting adventure. Sharing your experiences with your teammates brighten your trip and add an extra element of fun. However, even if you have the patience of a saint, there just comes a time when you need a few minutes alone to breathe and relax. If you deprive yourself of this time it can put a cloud the whole experience. It is important that you get some alone time when traveling for sports. So here are a few ideas on how to get alone time during sports travel.

The easiest way is to put on a pair of headphones. If you are listening to music it tells people that you are not in the mood for conversation. It is not rude or reclusive. You are simply enjoying your music and taking a break from talk. Make sure to take along a CD player or iPod and your favorite songs or audio books. However, if you decide to bring electronics, keep an eye on them. Expensive toys like iPods and laptop computers offer desirable targets for theft.

Another means of getting some peace is to zone out. Use your imagination and let your thoughts take you to somewhere private, quiet, and calm. A general rule of human nature if that if you respect other people’s privacy, they will return the favor and respect yours as well. Try to be polite and tactful, but do not shy away from asking or time alone. If you are not rude about it, your friends and fellow athletes will not be offended.

If you have got energy to burn and want to get some stress out of your system, go for a jog or a long walk. Though it is not often safe to venture out alone in a strange place, if you remain alert and aware of your surroundings and stick to the safe side of town, you will be fine. Exploring a little by yourself gives you the leisure to enjoy interesting places without worrying about anyone else getting bored. Just make sure not to overdo it and save some energy for your games!

Last but not least, bring a cell phone. Yak with someone back at home and get some time away to have a private conversation. Or rant and rave about the trip to a close friend. Discussing both ups and downs of your sports travel adventure will help you to release emotion and sort things through in your head. You will come away refreshed and calmed.

If you need some time to yourself, try one of these great ideas. Having a chance to relax and catch your breath will help you focus and play your best at the sport you love. Remember to not be afraid to seize an opportunity to be alone. Though it may seem unsociable, most everyone will understand and will honor your privacy. Just make sure to respect theirs and not invade their own alone time. If you follow this simple guideline, you will save yourself a lot of frustration during your travel and you will end up enjoying the trip far more.
