Autumn in America

By: Liz Patterson

As summer fades and the cool, crisp feeling starts creeping into the air, doesn’t it make you want to travel? Every fall, I feel like roaming over the country like a gypsy. However, obligations and responsibilities always keep me tied to home. So why not make time for a vacation this year and experience the wonder of the stirring fall foliage. Leave your cares and the blandness of everyday routine behind and set out on a trip you will never forget.

Some of the best fall travel destinations can be found right here in the United States. You do not have to fly out to Tuscany to experience the glory of autumn – although that is always a great idea. You can see the beauty of the season for yourself without having to go too far from home. So take a look at these top five fall destinations in America.

Great Smoky Mountains

These breathtaking mountains come alive during the autumn with a blaze of crimson, magenta, orange, gold, and blue mist. With over five hundred thousand acres of scenic wonderland, the Great Smoky Mountains are an ideal destination for the travelers wanting to soak in the beauty of the fall foliage and the fun activities of the season. Hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and camping opportunities are in abundance.

San Francisco

Though you will not find the glorious fall foliage in San Francisco, this city will be full of fantastic fun and sights to see. For in San Francisco, the seasons are backwards. Summer is full of chilly nights and foggy days, yet fall brings an ‘Indian Summer’, with warm, sunny days perfect for the tourist.

See the famous Golden Gate Bridge, explore North Beach and eat lunch in a café, go to Pier 39 and watch sea lions, or have a blast riding on a cable car. Whatever you do, you are sure to have a great time in this entertaining city.

New York City

Stroll the bustling cities and feel the crinkle of fall leaves under your feet. The air is refreshing and energizing and the air is full of excitement. While in New York City, make sure to see Central Park in its flame of autumn color. Also, get tickets to the reopening of the Metropolitan Opera and other great entertainments.

New England

New England is the icon of fall travel. Just imagine the fresh air and the feast of colors everywhere you look, elegantly contrasted by the white church steeples. Because of its reputation as an amazing destination, New England is well accustomed to tourists and is an easy and hospitable place to travel in. So take a scenic drive through Vermont, or visit apple orchards in New Hampshire, and enjoy the beautiful New England countryside.

Napa Valley

Harvest season in wine country is a trip you will not want to miss. Gorgeous scenery, luxurious hotels, and excellent wine are just a few of the benefits of a fall trip to Napa Valley in Northern California. Explore the enchanting towns and the picturesque vineyards. If you are in the mood for a vacation full of both peace and relaxation, and fun and beautiful sights, indulge yourself and take a trip to Napa Valley.

So break free of the ordinariness this fall and treat yourself to an extraordinary vacation you will remember your whole life. Consider one of these top five autumn destinations in America.
