Belize Highlights

By: Liz Patterson

Belize is rising in popularity as a fantastic tourist destination for families, because of its relatively safe environment and friendliness towards tourists. Though small and often overlooked, Belize is a country with a lot of opportunities to offer. Incredible scuba diving and snorkeling sites, enchanting rainforests, sunny Caribbean islands, and intriguing Mayan ruins are just a few of the highlights of Belize, Central America. There are a myriad of experiences waiting to be explored.

Caye Caulker

This little Caribbean island, just a half-hour boat trip off the coast of Belize, is a fun and colorful way to get a glimpse of their easy-going, bright culture. Geared at accommodating tourists, Caye Caulker’s white sandy streets are sided by colorful shops and tasty restaurants. Buy a cup of exquisite fresh fruit and a beach towel and relax on the sand, watching the kids play in the crystal-clear turquoise waves. Just make sure to wear sunscreen, because that beautiful white sand also reflects the sunrays and burns fair skin easily!

Or if you are in a more adventurous mood, take a guided snorkeling tour of a coral reef, or explore a bed of manatees. Though because of the strength required to swim against slight ocean currents, I would not recommend this activity for younger kids. However, it makes an amazing adventure for adults and teens. If you are a brave soul, try swimming with the sharks and stingrays. Yes, it is safe, though rather alarming!

After a fun-filled day at Caye Caulker, travel inland for a trip back in time. This is a perfect family trip because it combines fun and sightseeing with learning and adventure. Wander amidst the towering ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich and be transported back into a fascinating and wild culture. The wide green lawns and patches of rainforest are quiet and serene, but when you explore the ancient temples, you cannot help but get a thrill and a shiver up your spine at the sheer wonder of the sight.

Towering 130 feet above the main plaza is the central structure of the Mayan city, El Castillo. If you want to see the breathtaking vista, you can hike up the narrow stone staircases to the very top of the castle. From there you can see out over the wildly beautiful Belizean landscape, as well as Guatemala.

St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

Climbing up the steps of Xunantunich and wandering through the Mayan city will leave you ready to cool off in the refreshing waters of the inland Blue Hole. This enchanting sapphire blue pool is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing and taking in the exotic beauty of the rainforest. The freshwater Blue Hole is 25 feet deep and the result of a collapsed karst sinkhole.

Another exciting attraction to the Blue Hole National Park is St. Herman’s Cave. A tour of this fascinating cave with its magical atmosphere and unearthly stalactites will be an interesting addition to your group’s agenda. Just remember to wear good hiking shoes because the floor of the cave can often be wet and slippery. Flip-flops just won’t work well.

Whether you are in the mood to cruise the Caribbean and relax on Cay Caulker’s beaches, or if you want to explore Mayan ruins and stalactite caves, Belize offers the perfect opportunities for a family vacation of a lifetime. This popular travel destination has it all: colorful, welcoming culture, fascinating sights, and fun activities.
