Having a Blast in Belize

By: Liz Patterson

When on a mission trip, fun should never be swept aside by and over-emphasis on the seriousness of the endeavor. Yes, mission travel is an important experience. But it should not be without its share of joy and excitement. That is why you and your team should make sure to take a day off for recreation. After a couple week’s hard work a day at the beach or exploring the rainforest is well-earned. If you are planning a mission trip to Belize, here are a few experiences you will not want to miss out on.

St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

Cooling off in the refreshing waters of the inland Blue Hole is a fun and morale-boosting experience for your team. This enchanting sapphire blue pool is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing and taking in the exotic beauty of the rainforest. The freshwater Blue Hole is 25 feet deep and the result of a collapsed karst sinkhole.

Another exciting attraction to the Blue Hole National Park is St. Herman’s Cave. A tour of this fascinating cave with its magical atmosphere and unearthly stalactites will be an interesting addition to your team’s recreation day. Just remember to wear good hiking shoes because the floor of the cave can often be wet and slippery. Flip-flops will not be sufficient.

Caye Caulker

This little Caribbean island, just a half-hour boat trip off the coast of Belize, is a fun and colorful way to get a glimpse of their easy-going, bright culture. It is an ideal day outing for your mission team. Geared at accommodating tourists and travelers, Caye Caulker’s white sandy streets are sided by colorful shops and tasty restaurants. Buy a cup of exquisite fresh fruit and a beach towel and relax on the sand, watching the crystal-clear turquoise waves. Just make sure to wear sunscreen, because that beautiful white sand also reflects the sunrays and burns fair skin easily!

Or if you are in a more adventurous mood, take a guided snorkeling tour of a coral reef, or explore a bed of manatees. If you are a brave soul, try swimming with the sharks and stingrays. Yes, it is safe, though rather alarming! That will certainly be one memory you will never forget.

Xunantunich

After a fun-filled day at Caye Caulker, travel inland for a trip back in time. No matter if you have a enthusiasm for history or not, an excursion to the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich will be a fascinating and wonder-filled experience. The wide green lawns and patches of rainforest are quiet and serene, but when you explore the ancient temples, you cannot help but get a thrill and a shiver up your spine at the sheer wonder of the sight.

Towering 130 feet above the main plaza is the central structure of the Mayan city, El Castillo. The traveler in search of breathtaking vistas can hike up the narrow stone staircases to the very top of the castle. From there you can see out over the wildly beautiful Belizean landscape, as well as Guatemala.

Whether you and your team are in the mood to cruise the Caribbean and relax on Cay Caulker’s beaches, or if you want to explore Mayan ruins and stalactite caves, Belize offers the perfect opportunities. This popular travel destination has it all: colorful, welcoming culture, fascinating sights, and fun activities. So take a break from your work for a day of recreation and experience the delights that Belize has to offer. You are sure to have a blast in beautiful Belize!
