Historical Travel Destinations

By: Liz Patterson

If you are looking for a way to make history come alive, educational travel is the thing for you. Reading about the pioneers can give you a grasp of their lifestyle, but riding on a wagon train and experiencing their amazing journey for yourself is unforgettable. Educational travel makes learning full of fun, fascination, and adventure.

Though traveling to Greece for ancient history would be ideal, it is often out of the question financially. However, if you are studying American history, taking a trip to see some famous sights is very affordable and just as exciting and memorable. There is an extensive variety of places in the United States. Here are a few to consider.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
At the famous sight of one of the most important battles in the Civil War, your student can get to meet Robert E. Lee or Abe Lincoln through the costumed interpreters that perform at the Dobbin House Tavern. The Dobbin House Tavern is a fascinating experience in and of itself. Restored to be historically accurate with the time period, it is a great way for your students to be immersed in the Civil War days, learn about Robert E. Lee and Abe Lincoln, and have fun too.

Plymouth Plantation, Massachusetts
If you visit Plymouth Plantation you will find a wonderful variety of things to learn and sights to see. Make sure to meet the Wampanoag, a tribe who have lived in that region for hundreds and hundreds of years. That will be an intriguing experience. Also when you travel to Plymouth Plantation, you can experience what it would have been like to live in the days of the Pilgrims who came over on the Mayflower. There is a host of things to see at the craft center where you can see potters, weavers, tailors, and many others at work. When you are reading about colonial America, be sure to see Plymouth Plantation.

Williamsburg, Virginia
Williamsburg is an exquisitely preserved town that has much to offer and is a fantastic learning adventure for your students. Walk the streets and meet the costumed interpreters who have captivating stories to tell and can really give you a picture of the time period. It is like a huge museum that is alive and talks to you. Williamsburg is a history teacher’s dream come true. Students will be excited and drawn in to the time period, eagerly learning more than any textbook could tell them, and having a great time.

Whether you decide to travel to Gettysburg, Plymouth Plantation, or Williamsburg, it will end up being the highlight of your American history class. Instead of instilling a basic grasp of historical facts into your student, inspire them with a love and passion for the incredible story of our country. By helping them to appreciate the past, you give them a deeper, fuller, and more real perspective on the present.

Educational travel is the best way to make history come alive. It interests even the most unenthusiastic student and shows them that history and learning can be a fun and memorable adventure.
