Incredible Wonders of the World

By: Liz Patterson

Certainly one of the most life-changing and memorable vacations you will ever go on will be a tour of all the man-made wonders of the world.  From the Great Pyramids of Giza to the Parthenon in Athens, these destinations will never fail to excite and inspire. If you are a lover of history, architecture, art, and travel, these five destinations will be a trip you will never forget. Just make sure to bring you camera and journal, because you will want to document every part of this amazing travel experience.

Chichén Itzá

Located in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá are a monument to ingenuity, power, and the impressive culture of the Mayans. The city of Chichén Itzá dates back to the 7th century and is steeped in mystery and atmosphere. The central pyramid, El Castillo, is an adventure and challenge to climb, but the incredible view from the top will be well worth the effort.

The Great Pyramids

The only remaining wonder in the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramids of Giza are a definite must-see for any traveler. Amidst the magnificent desert and the stunning Egyptian sunsets, the pyramids are guaranteed to take your breath away. Every sense will be profoundly impacted by the sight of these astonishing structures.

The Taj Mahal

My personal favorite is the lavishly elegant and graceful Taj Mahal, an everlasting testament to love. Built wholly of white marble and adorned with countless semi-precious stones, it is easy to get lost in the beauty and enchantment of this gorgeous palace. Constructed in the 17th century as a shrine for the wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, the Taj Mahal took 20,000 workers and 22 years to complete. The final product now stands for our wonder and inspiration.

The Parthenon

Looming over the city of Athens is the ancient hilltop of the Acropolis, on which rests the impressive Parthenon and several other Greek monuments. Constructed in the 5th century BC, the Parthenon was a temple to the goddess Athena, who was the patron deity of the city, according to Greek mythology. The pilgrimage up to the summit of the Acropolis and the Parthenon building is full of other temples, shrines, tombs, and sculptures which will give you a beautiful glimpse into the historic Greek culture. Also, if it is a clear day, the sweeping view of Athens you will have from the top of the Acropolis will not fail to inspire.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, sometimes called the “lost city of the Incas,” was rediscovered in 1911. This stunning gem hidden away in the Andes Mountains of Peru is one of the only Incan sites to remain unharmed by the 16th-century Spanish conquistadors. Its temples of limestone set against the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains are bound to be a memory you will never forget. Machu Picchu is definitely a sight you will want to see on your tour of the great man-made wonders of our world.
