Making Educational Travel Safe

By: Liz Patterson

Educational travel is fun, exciting, and sensational. Often it is very easy to get caught up in the moment and forget to implement necessary safety measures. But there is great risk for mishaps when traveling and it is crucial that you take into consideration some of these helpful tips on how to stay safe. If you apply these suggestions, you will save yourself a great deal of worry, stress, and a hassle. You want your trip to be a fascinating, enjoyable, and memorable highlight of your education, so do not let it be ruined by any unfortunate event due to ignoring proper safety guidelines.

The most critical safety guideline to always remember is to keep a tenacious eye on your luggage. When you are traveling, that one suitcase and backpack is all you have to live out of for two weeks, or however long you are going. If that bag is stolen or lost, you are utterly stranded. So never leave your luggage unattended and do not let it out of your sight.

Another important safety measure is to carry-on as much of your supplies as you can. Check only what you absolutely have to. Though this may seem overly-paranoid, it is very realistic. Stories of lost luggage not arriving for weeks are all too common. Also, make sure you have a change of clothes and other necessities in your carry-on bag with you just in case your checked bags end up taking a long detour!

The last safety tip can apply to any kind of travel and wherever you go to. It is to stick together. Never go off alone in a strange place, even if you want to be by yourself or are frustrated and not feeling well. Make sure you take one or two people with you, preferably an adult. If you are a girl, try to find a male escort if you are going somewhere far away from the rest of your group. Even if your escort isn’t tall and intimidating, the mere fact that he is male will warn off many potential threats or hassles.

Perhaps the most helpful advice you can apply is to just be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for unusual or out-of-place things, like someone staring at you. In a third-world country, there is a stereotype that all American tourists are wealthy. This increases the motivation for pick-pocketing and makes it dangerous for international travelers. However, being alert and attentive help you remember crucial safety precautions and help you to react quickly should any mishap occur. Keep an eye on your supplies, luggage, vehicle, or anything of value that you bring.

These are all excellent and crucial tips for being safe on your educational trip. If you apply them it will spare you a great deal of hassle and risk. So be safe, be confident, and join in the excitement of learning new things and experiencing fascination new sights. Though travel comes with certain risks, the inspiration and lasting impact of educational travel make it well worth it.
