Safe Sports Travel

By: Liz Patterson

Though travel is exciting and fun, you always have to be cautious and keep your wits about you. There are many risks when traveling and the possibility for many things to go wrong. However, if you take into consideration a few of these helpful security steps, your trip will be much safer, and you and your sports team will be able to have a great time without worrying.

The best advice I can give you is to carry-on as much of your supplies as you can. Though this may seem to be taking things to a paranoid extreme, I assure you, it is very realistic. Mishaps of suitcases being lost for weeks and weeks happen far too frequently. It is very important that you check only what you absolutely have to. Make sure you have a change of clothes and other necessities in your carry-on bag with you just in case your checked bags end up taking a long detour! Especially for a sports team member, if your jersey goes on an unexpected trip to Chicago when you’re headed to Los Angeles, you are completely out of luck and cannot play. Make sure to pack the necessities for your games in a bag that you keep with you on the plane.

Another critical safety guideline is to always keep your luggage in sight when you are traveling and at the airport. When you are far away from home, that one suitcase and backpack is all you have to live out of for days or weeks, even months. If that bag is stolen or lost, you are stranded. So never leave your luggage unattended and do not let it out of your sight. Luggage theft is also a common story.

Although you most likely already know this one, I must remind you of the all-time most important rule of safety: stick together! Even if you aren’t feeling well or are frustrated or want to be by yourself, never go off alone in a strange place. Make sure you take one or two people with you, preferably an adult. If you are a girl, try to find a male escort if you are going somewhere far away from the rest of the team members. Even if your escort isn’t tall and intimidating, the mere fact that he is male will warn off many potential threats or hassles.

Perhaps the most helpful advice you can apply is to just be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for unusual or out-of-place things, like someone staring at you. Things like this help you remember crucial safety precautions and help you to react quickly should any mishap occur. Keep an eye on your supplies, luggage, sports equipment, or anything of value that you bring.

These are all excellent and crucial tips for being safe on your sports trip. If you apply them it will spare you a great deal of hassle and risk. So be safe, be confident, and have fun playing the sport you love. Enjoy the competition and excitement of traveling. But always keep these safety measures in mind wherever you go.
