Staying Safe on Family Travel

By: Liz Patterson

Though you are looking forward to the fun and adventure of family travel, it is extremely important that you always be cautious and keep in mind safety precautions. There are many risks when traveling and the possibility for many things to go wrong. However, if you take into consideration a few of these helpful security steps, your family vacation will be a blast. You will prevent a great deal of worry, stress, and disasters which could potentially ruin the trip you have been looking forward to.

The number one tip is to carry-on as much of your supplies as you can. Yes, this may seem a little over-the-top, but it is sadly all too realistic. Mishaps of suitcases being lost for weeks and weeks happen frequently. It is crucial that you check only what you must. Make sure you have a change of clothes and other necessities in your carry-on bag with you just in case your checked bags end up taking a long detour! Can you imagine traveling for a week or more with nothing but the clothes on your bag and whatever you can borrow from other family members?

Another significant safety precaution is to always keep your luggage in sight when you are traveling and at the airport. When you are far away from home, that one suitcase and backpack is all you have to live out of for days or weeks, even months. If that bag is stolen or lost, you are stranded. So never leave your luggage unattended and do not let it out of your sight. Luggage theft is also a common story. Especially if you are traveling to third-world countries, this is important. American tourists have a stereotype for being wealthy and their baggage offers a tempting target for theft.

Although you hopefully already know and implement this bit of advice, I must remind you of the all-time most helpful rule of safety: stick together! When you are traveling with your family, you often want to get some time to yourself, away from annoying younger siblings or overly-enthusiastic parents. However, it is extremely unwise to venture out alone in a strange place. Make sure you take one or two people with you, preferably an adult. If you are a girl, try to find a male escort if you are going somewhere far away from the rest of the family. Even if your brother isn’t tall and intimidating, the mere fact that he is male will warn off many potential threats or hassles.

Last but not least, just be aware of your surroundings. If you are alert, you can prevent many mishaps and react quickly if something were to occur.

These are all excellent and crucial tips for being safe on your family vacation. If you apply them it will spare you a great deal of hassle and risk. So enjoy your travels and don’t let yourself worry. By applying these simple safety measures, you are bound to have a secure and fun vacation.
