Top 3 Belize Destinations

By: Liz Patterson

Sunny beaches, lush jungles, and exciting activities abound in beautiful Belize, Central America. Known as “Mother Nature’s best kept secret,” Belize may not be your first idea for a vacation. However, it is full of fun and incredible memories waiting to be made. So let’s take a look at these three must-see destinations in Belize.

Caye Caulker

Thirty minutes off the mainland is the island of Caye Caulker, the paradise of tourists from all over the world. Take a golf cart and coast through the white, sandy streets or stroll through the fun and colorful shops. Caye Caulker offers a small resort or more affordable hotels, as well as some great restaurants. The people are friendly and accommodating and wherever you go you will be greeted with smiles. Whether shopping, laying on a beach towel and soaking up the sun, or splashing around in the turquoise Caribbean, you will never lack for activities and opportunities for delightful fun. Just remember to wear sun screen! The brilliant sunlight reflects off the white sand and can burn skin quite easily.

There is a saying that life is not the breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. That certainly describes the incredible feeling of wonder and triumph that you get when looking out over Belize and Guatemala from the top of the 130-foot Mayan ruin of Xunantunich. When traveling through the Cayo District of Belize, you will definitely want to make time for these spectacular ruins. After a trip across the river on a ferry and a short drive through the jungle (where you might see iguanas and other cool creatures if you keep an eye out) you will come to the visitors’ center, full of fascinating information about Xunantunich and its history. Then you are free to explore the different plazas, temples, and pyramids in this ancient city. Just make sure to wear good hiking shoes and drink lots of water. I got stuck half-way up the central pyramid once, unable to go to the top because I felt so faint from dehydration. You will not want to miss the amazing view, so make sure you can make it to the top.

St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park boasts a variety of activities. First you can schedule a guided tour of the fascinating Crystal Cave, where you can wander through yawning caverns ornamented with crystalline formations. Or you can grab your flashlight and head over to St. Herman’s Cave instead, where you can hike past a subterranean stream and stalactites. Rich with mystery, intrigue, and history, St. Herman’s Cave is one adventure you will remember forever.

Also in St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park is the freshwater Blue Hole, an enchanting destination for hikers, tourist, and divers. This 25-foot deep, sapphire-blue pool is perfect for swimming in after a long, sweaty hike. Float on the cool water, listen to the birds, and enjoy a supremely enjoyable afternoon.

If you are dreaming of a beach vacation with a flare of adventure, check out Belize and experience some of the extraordinary sights and opportunities to be had in Caye Caulker, Xunantunich, and St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park.
