Top 5 Sights to See in Paris

By: Liz Patterson

Paris, the city of beauty and fashion, is famous throughout the world for its breathtaking sights. The Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Notre-Dame Cathedral… These iconic monuments are just a few of the delights and wonders to be found in this colorful city. Any world traveler will not want to miss out on the traditional trip to lovely Paris. With an exciting and bright night life, an exquisite, mouthwatering cuisine, and a romantic culture, Paris is a fabulous destination for sightseers, travelers, and honeymooners alike. So to make your planning a little easier, let’s take a look at the top five must-see monuments of Paris.

The Eiffel Tower

A stop at the Eiffel Tower is a given. You cannot experience Paris without seeing this 120-year-old feat of architecture. Instead of just catching a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower on postcards and books about Paris, you can gaze at it with your own eyes. Browse through the gift shop on the lower level or climb up to the second level and dine at the snazzy Jules Verne restaurant 410 feet off the ground. If you are adventurous, climb to the third and top level a dizzying 1,062 feet in the air. You can imagine the spectacular view you will have of the city.

Arc de Triomphe

Dedicated to the glory of the French Revolution, the Arc de Triomphe was built in the early 19th century. This beautiful monument stands 164 feet high and is an amazing work of art. Adorned with sculptures and depictions of the epic Napoleonic battles, the Arc de Triomphe is a sight one must see to fully appreciate the passion and splendor of Paris.

Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, or the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, is a Roman Catholic shrine constructed in 1875 as an act of penance when France was defeated by Prussia in 1870. Now it stands as a breathtakingly beautiful masterpiece of architecture. A trip to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart will be an experience you will never forget. Resplendent in its magnificence, there are hardly any words to describe it. In the interior of the church you will see impressive pipe organs, the largest church bell in France, and many more wonders and works of art. The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur should definitely be on your list of must-sees along with the Eiffel Tower.

Notre-Dame Cathédrale

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is an iconic figure with its two majestic towers and incredible design. Made immortal in Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, this cathedral is a fascinating destination for both literature and history lovers, and tourists. Built from the 12th to 14th century, the Notre-Dame Cathedral boasts not only gorgeous architecture, but intricate stained glass windows, sculptures, paintings, furniture, and astonishing gargoyles that perch on the roof gutters.

Sainte-Chapelle

The final of the top five Parisian monuments is the most famous chapel of the city. The Sainte-Chapelle is a 13th century treasure of Gothic architecture. From the interior colorful, majestic upper chapel to the graceful silhouette from the exterior, the Sainte-Chapelle is through and through an amazing wonder.

While in Paris, you must make time to see these five exciting sights. The Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, Notre-Dame Cathédrale, and the Sainte-Chapelle.
